12 Tanzanians yesterday have been abducted in the area of
Namoyo, State of South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the
rebel maimai, writes Aisha Amran.
Information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and
Cooperation of the East Africa states that these people are the drivers of the
trucks and that, after being abducted in their cars; they were relegated to the
wild and then their four trucks burnt by fire.
Out of these trucks, eight are owned by the Tanzanian
businessman, Azim Dewji and some are businessmen from Kenya.
The report states that the rebels have given 24 hours,
starting yesterday at 10 evening to pay cash amount of US $ 4,000 (more than a
million Sh. 8m of Tanzania) for each driver to be able to release the hostages.
"Had threatened to kill the hostages if they will not
be paid the same amount of money they want arrives at 10 pm today, though in
the event 2 Tanzanian drivers have managed to escape, and helped to give an
official statement," the statement stated.
The government of Tanzania has claimed that already has
taken the initial stages of contact with the government of the DRC to ensure
that these drivers are released as soon as possible to secure.
However, the government does not explained, what steps have
been taken to save these drivers, as if the amount of money needed to pay or
not.
This event is the second to occur in recent years where 2015
some priests of Islam from Tanzania were abducted in DRC, but they managed to
release without any side effects.
